We received over 150 completed surveys on promoting early learning. Over 50% of the survey respondents generously shared their parenting tips on how to support early learning. Below is the summary.
- The majority of the respondents pointed out the critical roles of parents in children's development, and the importance of learning at home and starting early. Parents are their children's role models and best teachers. As parents, it is important to educate yourselves, and equally important to take good care of yourselves.
- Many parents emphasized the importance of parent engagement, especially reading to the children. Follow the children, make learning an interesting and playful experience, foster a love of learning, and stay patient (never force the children to learn).
- Many parents shared the benefits of routines and consistency, and following the Montessori method.
- Some parents also suggested limiting purchased toys, rather using what is available at home, and having more outdoor activities.
- Parents’ views on screen time and technology were divided. Some raised concerns over technology, while others saw the benefits of having some screen time.
- Some parents also brought up the importance of having a supporting group, which could include families, friends, teachers, and even social media groups and resources.
- Some parents shared very specific tips, such as “speak full sentences even to an infant, “wait and give enough time for a child to respond”, and “describe your day to the child”.
